First, Thank you for at least clicking the link. This tells me you understand the nuance of the discussion.
I agree.
That's the main statement, I agree. All the reasons that you may not like AI, I agree. I too am concerned about water use*, energy, heat and sound of the proposed data centers that AI will require. However, I am a user of AI. How can that be? Well there is nuance here. You may have noticed the * when I mentioned water. The reason is that it depends on how they use the water to cool. Is it evaporative cooling? Is it a heat exchanger? These all change how much water is actually used. Where do data centers actually sit in the hierarchy of high water users? Say compared to irrigation of golf courses or our lawns?
These are all real issues and they can be highly problematic. However, the argument isn't really whether you or me are using AI. That is a drop in the bucket, I can run a small AI on my computer. The real issue is AI use at the commercial level. Big Business. All of these issues are real issues and it is the major companies and investments that are driving these data centers. It is just another example of the corporations using our natural resources for profit.
I don't want to get preachy on here. Please take a moment to go down that rabbit hole yourself.
My use of AI on this website:
Used Claude AI to code the Lordle game.
Also used Claude to help me code/troubleshoot the carousel to link my Youtube channel
